<< have a question for any of you experienced Potter Yatchters. Me and a
friend are thinking of (only thinking of it now) sailing his P-19 from
San Francisco to San Diego next summer. We would take 7-10 days sailing
during the day and anchoring or docking at night. Keeping in sight of
the coast the whole way. Both have some experience on sailboats but no
overnight /long cruise experience. We have sailed day sails on mountain
lakes and day trips off shore around San Diego. We would probably not be
cooking aboard but stopping along the way for suplies/hot meals. There
are few stretches of the California coast devoid of people and stores.
Question 1 are we crazy, question 2, what equipment and or supplies
would be required to make this a safe trip. Question 3 is an estimate of
50-75 miles per day realistic in the summer off of our coast. Feel free
to reply with any comments. Asbestos suit waiting. Sincerely, Dan

Dan,

Why won't you be cooking?? McDonalds and Taco Bell aren't located every few
miles along the seaway (yet), be grateful! With two of you aboard you can even
sail through the night, taking watches. And you needn't fear getting out of
sight off land, it is actually safer 60 miles or so offshore as the West Coast
tends to be a lee shore, meaning it can be hard to stay off of in a real blow.
