Hi George,

Around here, most sail lofts will add a UV edge cover to a sail that size for
$65-80.

UK quoted me about $400 for a 69 square foot lapper made of 6 oz hi-modulus
dacron with a UV edge cover, made for the CDI furler. It would be about
10-15% cheaper in white cloth (say $360). That also included two vertical
stripes for 1st and 2nd reef, and rings attached with webbing at the tack and
clew instead of grommets, which rolls up much more smoothly on the CDI . The
cloth is much stronger than the factory sails', but it does cost more. But
for the extra money, I get a sail that will hold its shape for many, many
years of hard use on windy SF Bay.

I already have a tanbark lapper, so I've ordered a 40 square foot "working
jib" from UK Sailmakers. It's just a little bigger than the standard working
jig, since I can reef it on the CDI. The working jib is the standard sail
around SF Bay for summertime on a Potter.

You can still get good performance from your headsail when you reef up to 30%
of the sail area with the CDI if the sail is cut right. so my 40 square
footer will work well reefed down to about 28 sf. If you reef the headsail
more than that, you can still sail home in a nasty blow, but you can't point
mearly as well because you get a "bag" in the draft of the jib.

Hope this helps.

Judy B
