I wouldn't recommend it to others, but I have sailed with board up as well.
Off the wind in light air you can reduce wetted area and theoretically gain
a little speed by doing this. I remember once in a race I was passing(!) a
Hunter (410 i think it was, a big boat) and as I was approaching the mark i
started cranking on the winch to lower the board. The skipper of the hunter
yells out "hey do you have a propeller attached to that crank or what?" :)
