I was going to jump into the fray but opened my new West Marine catalog =
and was a bit surprised by what I found.
First, let's face it Judy stretched the prices a bit to fit her view... =
but not as bad as I remember it was when I was outfitting HC.
=20
WM lists a triple Lewmar at $120.99, but a Harken#150 with optional =
fairlead comes to $24.78. Times 3 =3D $74.34 or $46.65 difference per =
side, almost a hundred bucks difference for the complete job. Now, if =
the added strength of the Lewmar (3 times that of the Harken) is really =
needed, then that is the way to go but, I don't know if it is (for most =
of us). I have used Harken Cam-Matic #150 cleats for the halyards on =
Happy Camper for almost three years now and have had no problems (that I =
didn't cause). I have never had a line jump out of the cleat by =
accident and they always let go when I want them to. I bought the =
simple fairleads to keep the price down. Main reason that I went to the =
cam cleats verses the clutches was price. At the time, I remember the =
clutches costing over twice that of the cleats.=20
Now that the prices seem to be closer (or I just have more "boat" cash =
in my pocket) If I had it to do it over, I think I would go with the =
clutches. =20
BTW I only have the 150s on the main and jib halyards. I use the cleat =
that came with the mast raising system for the jib downhaul and =
installed a "tiny" Harken for the topping lift. I have one wench on =
board but no winches. I don't have a genny, and sail for fun, not work, =
so haven't found a need for one yet.
Sorry about my low-tech ways, but they seem to be working for me.
