I'll have to experiment with that problem. I had never hove to with my
sloop rig either, but I understand the value of doing so. I read somewhere
that a gaff-rigged cat can be hove to. It involves lowering the gaff to
some extent. Something similar may be possible with the lateen.

Larry Brown mentions heaving to with his lateen rig when it is reefed but
didn't go into details (in Frugal YachtingJ).
