On the Estela trip, my GPS II+ batteries ran low and I lost all my
waypoints, preferences, etc. The manual says that should not happen because
the unit has a 10-year lithium battery that is supposed to retain the
memory when the AA batteries run low or are being changed. I've had the GPS
for over two years, and this was at least the third time that I had lost my
waypoints.

Since there is no information in the manual on replacing the lithium
battery except to return the unit to an authorized service center, I
checked with Charlie, the GPS expert at my neighborhood West Marine store
(the original West Marine store, actually) to get his recommendation on
replacing the lithium battery, if that was indeed the problem.

Charlie advised me that there had been a bad batch of batteries, and if I
brought the GPS back with the original box and manual, he would exchange it
for a new one - not the battery but the complete GPS.

So I now have a brand new GPSII+ with a working lithium battery and the
latest software, v3.02 vs the v2.03 that was in my old one. The new unit
has a database of all the North American cities, which I don't believe was
in my old unit.

Anyway, if any of you have a GPS with amnesia, West Marine may have the
cure. It didn't seem to matter that my warranty had expired over a year
ago, and I never mentioned the fact that I had bought the unit at that WM
store. Charlie did say he needed the original box because it had serial
number information and such.
