O.K. folks, I took very careful notes on our second fully executed launch.
I also made some other calculations which might be of interest regarding
sailing vs. other activities required to plan, execute, and clean-up after
our trip to Tomales Bay last weekend.

By way of general report I can say there were three P-19s present:
Sunshine, Happy Camper, and Riptide. We all arrived at the launch area at
about the same time, a little after 9:00 a.m. Here is how our set-up went:

1. Climb up on boat and release belly band, remove and store hatch, spill
coffee.

2. Clean up coffee.

3. Untie mast from mast crutch, untie and organize shrouds/halyards.
Walk mast up with David (8) pulling on forestay. Spilled coffee again.
(Thanks to sippy tops, you can spill the same cup over and over)

4. Clean up coffee, move cup.

5. All the above was accomplished in about 10 minutes.

6. Remove motor and motor brace from cockpit.

7. Mount motor on motor mount.

8. Remove tiller/rudder from cabin attach to boat.

9. Mess around with lines for beaching.

8. Remove boom from cabin, attach to mast.

Total time to this point 30 minutes

9. Move various and sundry equipment and supplies from trunk to cockpit.

10. Move various and sundry equipment and supplies from cockpit to cabin.

11. Hook up fuel tank.

12. Remove and hook up mainsail.

13. Hook up jib.

14. Have Larry show me how to rig jib downhall.

15. Spill and clean up coffee.

16. Find dock lines.

17. Attach dock lines.

16. Back trailer into water.

Elapsed time 55 minutes.

17. Park trailer and pay fee

18. Start motor, cast off and pull out from dock.

19. Fool around with rudder to make it go down (5 min here).

20. Put battens in main and hoist main while drifting around.

21. Start sailing (actually we started out motoring).

Total set-up time 1 hr and 20 minutes!

Some other facts and figures about our trip.

Driving to and from Tomales Bay
5 hours

Set up time (see above)
1.5 hours

Take down time
1.0 hours

Time spent packing for trip
2 hours

Trip to marine supply to make sure I had it all 1 hour

Filling water containers, stowing food
.5 hour

Mounting engine for transport
.25 hours

Time thinking about trip, checking chart, planning etc. 5 + hours

Time cleaning out boat, washing sails,
storing and flushing engine
2 hours

Washing and covering boat
1.5 hours

Total time in prep and clean-up
19.75 hours

Total time on the water (10:30 Sat to 9:30 Sun) 23
hours

Ratio of "on water" to "prep and clean" = 1.16 hours on water per hour
other stuff

Now the sailing on Saturday was pretty good, the wind was a little light in
the a.m. In the p.m. we ran north the length of the bay, outpacing a
Seaward 16 on the way. I would say we were under sail no more than 5
hours.

Ratio of time under sail to other stuff = .253 In other words, for every
hour under sail we spent almost four hours preparing or cleaning up. While
all of this was not unpleasant (especially the chart looking, etc.) this
is a pretty low ratio.

What happened on Sunday? Well it started to rain pretty good at about 8:00
a.m. Since we had to take out before noon due to the tide, we just packed
it in early. Good rain gear was a plus. (By the way, Larry can steer
Happy Camper while in the cabin under his dodger. Really cool.) So
sailing on Sunday could have improved this ratio quite a bit. Of course
others may see areas for improving our performance. I for one will finish
my cofee before rigging in the future. Also, I am going to store the sail
with battens in place on the boom for faster set-up. Our take down was
totally lame compared to Larry and Jerry's, so we could work some on this.
Trailer guides are definitely in our future.

For those of you who are new to Pottering, I highly recommend going out
with pros like Larry and Jerry. They were super-extraordinarily helpful
beyond the call of duty. They had to wait for us at nearly every juncture,
and did so cheerfully!

By the way, I didn't consider the amount of time of spent on email keeping
abreast of the latest is Potterland (100+ hours ?) but then let's not be
silly ....
