When Pyro Tech came into our possesion, she was about as crudy as your
new baby is--what we found for the rub-rails was simple green to get the
main gunk off, then went over it with a bleaching powder cleanser like
Comet, then a once over again with the simple green. Elbow grease and
some light rubbing compound is what Randy used to clean up the gel-coat,
and as far as the wood trim--ours had that sad grey color, too. Randy
took all the pieces off--that's the one trick that was no fun,
slithering back under the cockpit, and removed all the wood work. He
then amply filled the cracks with lots of wood dough (well, that's what
I call it) sanded everything down and gave it a coating of stain to
match the wood dough color that he picked. Since he is a firm believer
in Polyurethane, <hint, if you come to visit, don't stand still too long
if he has a paint brush in his hand!!> after he got the surface smooth
again, he gave everything a good dousing with polyurethane--it yellows,
I am told, but on darker wood tones, that doesn't seem to make much
difference. Then he crawled back under the cockpit, made sure there were
plenty of washers and backing material, and re-attached the wood work. I
don't have to do anything more than give it a good wipe down, and they
are still as good looking as the day he put them back on. The cracks
filled in nicely, and he didn't have to fight with trying to make some
new ones, or buy replacements.
