Boom - above or below slot?

This may sound like a goofy question, but I'm going to
ask it anyway. Should the boom go above or below the
wide opening in the mast slot? With our main hoisted
all the way up, the boom seems to want to sit 1-2
inches below the opening. It gave us no problem at
the time, but if we wanted to pull the sail down and
lash it to the boom for the night, etc., it would have
to stay way up from the boom if the sail slides are
stopped. It just doesn't look right. Should I put
the boom above the slot despite the extra slack in the
sail that it might cause? Thanks for your help.
