Jim

I don't know if I should take credit for the extra bunk, but as I have never
been known for my humility... I will! When I bought HC she came with a
standard trailer and those oh so short bunks. I asked Darrow If it would
help (to lessen the strain on the haul) to support the keel with the trailer
instead of the boat. He said he would ask the builder, and about a month
later he came out with that modification. I traded my first trailer in on
one of the "converted" ones and was happy with the way it worked.

Now to the controversy. some on this list think that if the keel is not
resting on it's housing it will clunk around causing damage to the hull. I
never found this to be the case and was happy with the modification. That
was until I was stuck in a parking lot waiting for the tide to come in
enough so I could launch on a very shallow ramp. So, now HC is on her third
trailer, one of the Bajas. I can't say how much of an improvement the Baja
is over the standard in all aspects except one, trailering. That sucker is
wiiiiiide! Worth it though as it is a real trailer, much stiffer on the
road and a heck of a lot lower (easier to get in and out of the boat, load
things, and launch).
