This is one of the questions I have been asking. A couple of years ago my
winch, cable and two blocks failed. I sent one of the IM blocks to the
manufacturer (of the block) to see what they thought caused the failure. I
received a call from one of their engineers who told me that the failure was
caused by the wrong block being used for the application. That was even
though the block was listed as a rope / cable block with a rating of 500lb.
When I told him that the keel only weighed 400 lbs, and that it was being
lifted by a 2-1 tackle, he told me that there must be more weight/pressure
being applied to the blocks for them to fail. He told me he would call IM
and tell them that they should change to the stronger "cable only" blocks
that his company builds.

BTW, IM replaced the winch and the blocks (I used the ones they sent to run
my lines aft and bought the stronger "cable" blocks to use on the keel
system.
