Hi Harry,

I've been wanting to ask you about your lateen mast again. As I'm getting
closer to the time to get my junk mast, several options have come to mind. Your
message that talked about using the standard Sunfish mast and sail, stirred my
thinking. I used to have a Zuma (cousin to a Laser with a larger cockpit) and
it sported a free standing mast. I often sailed in pretty high winds hiking out
my 200 pounds, and still not keeping it flat. I never had any trouble with the
mast. I'm beginning to wonder if a Zuma or Laser mast would work for my junkrig
potter? What do you think about the strength of the small boat mast compared to
the standard mast that came with the Potter? Since the junk is supposed to
spill excess wind, do you think the mast will come back to shape or would it
eventually develop a set? I'd hate to pay big bucks for something that will
ultimately get trashed.
