Lesson of the story: become a collector of corks & wooden plugs.
Being, as previously admitted, both conservative and cowardly, I keep
a vast collection of same accessible by leaning into the cabin. In the
days before I had any autopilots, by my best recollections I thrice
frantically inserted plugs in my three cockpit drain thru-hulls when
not needed. These overreactions were prompted by paranoid delusions of
suddenly sluggish handling and an inability (rough conditions and no
self-steering) to dawdle down below to check for the imagined gusher.

No less "idiotic" than forgetting a plug (bad idea, those; best left
to runabouts) but less disastrous.
