A while back I had crewed on a friend's ocean voyager, and late at night i
was impressed with his lighting - all his cabin lights had two bulbs, one
normal bright white one, and one red one. The red bulbs help preserve your
night vision when navigating at night. For some reason red bulbs don't
affect your eyes the same way as other colors.

I looked in my catalogs upon my return from that trip and found that these
dual-bulb lamps were pretty expensive in all the catalogs I had.

But a month or so ago I saw an ad in SAIL from JSI for some dual-bulb cabin
lamps at the perfect potter price of $12.79 so i ordered one. It was on
backorder.

Just got the package from Johnson Sails today. The lamp is similar in size
to the existing lamp - it might evan screw to the same holes. Quality seems
decent, considering the price. Made in China. I'm not near my boat right
now, but i think this is going to work out nicely. I hooked it up briefly
to my car battery just to see that everything works, and the white beam is
BRIGHT - must be halogen. The red is much dimmer (and you want it to be).

I'll post more after I've had a chance to use the lamp at night installed on
the boat. I'll probably install using marine crimp connectors. I can't
imagine this install taking more than 10 minutes.
