Hi Scott,

I think you'll have a great time. I do recommend that you get a good NOAA chart
of the area you plan to spend time. There should be notations on the chart to
show designated anchorages. Use them if they meet your needs. Usually there
will be a description as to kind of bottom (ie. sand, or mud).

<We would love to anchor out overnight, but have never done it and have a few
questions.

>1. We have a P19 and one anchor, an 11 lb (I think) Danforth. Should we get
another anchor and put out two, or should this one be OK?

The one anchor should be fine as long as you have sufficient chain and scope. I
like to go over the required. I like a foot of chain for every foot of water
line length. Use either 7:1 or 10:1 scope. The real benefit of using 2 anchors
fore and aft (as it were) is that it reduces your swing radius. Give yourself
plenty of room with only one anchor.

<2. Will a Danforth be OK when the tide changes 180 degrees, or will it tend to
dislodge when we rotate around? Is there another anchor type you might
recommend to compliment the Danforth for a variety of bottom conditions? In
Charleston I think we have sandy, muddy, and weedy bottoms. No rocks I believe,
unless you count oyster beds.

You shouldn't have any problem with a Danforth in Charleston. You've got mostly
mud and the Bruce and CQR don't really do as well in soft mud.

<3. How can you tell if a mooring is public or private?

If you didn't put it there, it's probably private.

Perry
