Yes, they (can) operate on 3v, and will last for 24hrs on a set of batteries.
What they boil down to is a radio receiver, and automagic calculator. The
Pioneer is a VERY basic GPS,(4 satellite, 100 waypoint) and has been replaced
(by Magellan) with the Blazer 12 (which has more 'competitive' features), a
couple of months ago. All the Pioneers still floating around in the
suppliers' inventory will eventually get cheaper and cheaper. Of course,
without having charts on board, it may be difficult to use one of these
gps's, due to the fact it will only give you a (nonmagnetic) compass, and
your Lat/Long.
