It's worth remembering that bearing failure is often related to placing hot
bearings in to water which is much cooler. This is a real problem with power
boaters because they can rig quickly and back their trailer in the water
before the bearings have a chance to cool. They usually repeat the process
again and again. Bearing lube makes no difference in that case, the bearings
expand and contract and fracture. The time it takes to rig a P19 for example
the bearings should always have time to cool down, so as long as there is
grease in the bearings they should provide long service.
