I lash mine the same way from the top of the bow pulpit across the cabin top
(passing between the wooden handle and the sliding hatch cover) to an 8" -
high pad (which I fashioned from an old pillow, some duct tape, and a ziplok
plastic bag) to support it at the transom. I wrap 1 foot square pieces of
felt carpet pad around the mast where it touches the boat and (after three
years of trailering) have had no gelcoat marking or damage. The mast
extends about two feet in front of the pulpit and, with the palstic cap on
the bottom of the mast, has not poked through my cover (yet). I use 1/8th
inch diameter nylon cords to lash the mast (tying it to the pulpit, the
handle, and the motor mount) and then use these for whatever is needed
(tying them to the cabintop handles alongside the sail ties) while I sail.
