Robert,
There is a tool to extract cotter pins It looks like a badly bent up icepick. Autoparts stores should have one and
it shouldn't be very expensive as there isn't much to it. You push the point through the loop on the end of
the pin and pull it out. A small Phillips screwdriver might work as well. My guess is that the retainer nut has tightened / loosened
and is pressing on the pin and making it hard to extract. I know that the whole thing is covered in grease and in a dark
hole which doesn't exactly make it visible but you may be able to twist the nut a little one way or the other to try to get the
pin loose. A new one can be inserted w/ needle nosed pliers. You can use a bent nail or stiff coat hanger wire as a probe to
get the hole aligned w/ the castle nut first. I've done this sort of thing many times and it's a genuine pain but definitely possible.
Good luck!

PS. This may be belaboring the obvious, but jack the trailer wheel up before loosening the nut!

I tried to check on my trailer bearings but was unable to get out the
cotter pin that holds the retainer nut. I could have cut it out but then
was afraid I couldn't get one back in. It's recessed way back in the hub
with no room to extract or replace it. This is a Garges trailer. Anyone
else have problems with this and is there a solution?
