Most all of us have had those little things. Over the weekend had four-
1. forgot to lift the rudder when beaching into shore, so the sand lifted
it for me (right out of the pin holes. Duh.
2. forgot to uncleat the main when the big wind kicked up, so my crew and
i got to see how far a potter 19 can go over. We pulled what must have
been about 90 degrees give or take and we had witnesses. the water line
was up to the bottom of the windows on the lee side. We two bigger bodies
were on high side (rail meat) and two young teen boys in the cabin on the
high side-screaming in fear. I kind of found it fun. The CB was down
all the way but not locked or secured in any way, didnt come out or
anything. We heeled back to center and went through the roll two more
times one lesser and another just as bad as the first--still no turtle.
What a great boat. Also my 1st mate said the top of the mast was about 2
feet from the water at the apex of the heel roll. We did alright despite
some really shaken up teen kids. Me n' the mate were wanting more and
loved it. no reef on our sail design, but will know to loosen the cleat on
the main when the big wind comes in the future... Later I found 2 inches
of water in the side compartments just under the windows (about 3/4 of a
gallon total) Not sure how it got in, always thought my windows/rail seams
were water tight.
3. left the center bow mooring line untied when pulled out and drove home.
My crew had a chase car and noted it but said that it was long enought to
get caught under a trailer tire. We got it in time but could have snapped
the bow cleat off the deck and what a mess that would have been to repair.
4. my brand new rubber bow roller in the trailer disentegrated after 1
launch (bought at kmart) with the trip the mounts of the roller contacted
the hull, got a little gouge in the hull. Will be easy to fix with
gelcoat, but now have a yellow urethane roller from West marine (twice the
cost but much less hassle).
