Let me add as a 3.5 Tohatsu user, that a 3.5 is acceptable, but not preferrable. You will make headway with a motor this size, but it doesn't carry the umphh you might need in rougher waters/current. It will hit hull speed in calmer waters at about 1/2-3/4 throttle, and I'd say it has enough power to move the boat forward up to the point you wouldn't be able to use it (i.e. steep chop, where it pops out of the water a lot). If I had a choice, I'd have a 5 hp Honda, but it's definitely not worth the difference in price for me, especially at this point.
