My question: Is there some kind of sealant that would
adhere to plastic and
would be impervious to gasoline? Obviously there's no
pressure on it (as
long as I keep the vent open), so the weight of the gas is
all it has to
hold in.

Unexpectedly, I found that West epoxy sticks well to a
variety of plastics. Fixed some severe cracks in a
paddleboat, and repaired a cracked portapotty tank (similar
plastic) and the lid (different plastic). I used West epoxy
and fiberglass cloth. I wouldn't have guessed it would
adhere, but it does.

You can also repair the tank plastics with a glue gun- it is
the same material.
