However, any solution that uses loose flotation may not do
the job. The goal is to keep the waterline below the level
of the centerboard trunk. Loose flotation will just float to
the top, and may even pop out of an open cabin door.

But this idea is also useful for storing gear, so I like
it.

I store all small gear, lines, etc. in plastic 5 gallon drywall type
containers with the lids snapped firmly on. Even if mostly full they
have a
remarkable amount of flotation potential in addition to other uses. I
figure
they have about 2/3 cubic foot capacity empty, therefore about 40 pounds

flotation. 5 or 6 of these add quite a bit to your flotation overall.
