After lurking for a few days, it seemed like time to post something.
My family and I have recently began pottering aboard P15 #2380, "Akala". We
took delivery from the factory this spring, and trailered her home to San
Jose after a shakedown cruise on Lake Casitas. We made a few appearances at
Redwood City this spring, but chose our days rather poorly. Letting our
outings be dictated by factors other than the suitability of the day to
learning a new boat was not a great idea. Our second and third mates (9 and
3 years old) were new to the experience, and combined with a fairly chilly,
gusty couple of days, a broken shear pin on the motor, and the general lack
of familiarity I had with rigging the Potter, convinced my spouse that I had
made a serious mistake with our purchase.

Somewhat chastened, we slunk off to Lake Vasona to lick our wounds. Much
closer to home, and warmer, gentler breezes made for happier (if not very
exciting) sailing. The kids got more comfortable, I got much quicker at
rigging, and things generally started to come together. We've been back up
to Redwood City the last couple of weekends, prowling the channel and the
mudflats. We received friendly waves and inquiries from a couple of P19s
that we passed in the channel. The first of many pleasant encounters with
fellow potterers, I hope.

Time and tides permitting, we may try to reach the wreck of the USS Thompson
this weekend.

See you on the Bay!
