Ralph,

I find that the best motor depends on sailing conditions. For small lake
sailing I prefer the electric. Usage is measured in minutes. The big
advantage is that I'm more likely to turn on the electric than to start
an outboard. A small solar panel kept the battery charged up all summer.

On open water, I feel the greater power and longer endurance of the gas
model is an advantage.

I have an old 6 horse Evinrude for my 2000# Balboa 20, and it has always
been sufficient. The electric is a small 26 pound thrust model and it
also moves the boat against a 10-15 mph wind.
