Great list posted by Lars Mulford...

On the "art film" end of the spectrum, may I suggest the following
addition:

Roman Polanski's debut feature "Knife in the Water". Made in 1962 in
Poland, it is a low-key yet intense and gripping film about a couple
on a weekend sailing trip, taking along a young man who stirs up
emotions... Photographed in beautiful black and white, the sailboat
gets due attention. It's an entirely wooden craft, of course, without
an auxiliary engine which is why there is a scene where the two men
actually jump out and tow the boat along some reedy stretch of water,
presumably connecting two inlets, while the woman steers. My own
knowledge of sailing is rather limited, so I can't really judge how
accurate the sailing bits are, but it looked fairly authentic. (There's
nothing dramatic, though, like a storm or so.)

Leonard Maltin calls it a "brilliant piece of cinematic storytelling,
and a must-see movie".
