Bill,
I'm a fan of Extruded Polystyrene for flotation. It doesn't absorb water, can scored and broken like drywall and
glues together into odd shapes. In my part of the country it's used for poultry house insulation and is available
in 1", 1 1/2" and 2" thickness. It isn't nearly as easy as shoving an inner-tube into a space but it can't puncture
and if kept out of the sun will last almost forever. You can epoxy it in place and not worry about it floating out
at inopportune moments. We used it for flotation in my daughters sail boat. Her little boat has never capsized
but it's nice to know the flotation is there. Just in case.

Yo Potter People:

I know this is a subject that was beat to death in the not too distant past,
but I need to revisit it as I replaced mooring cleats and added adjustable
motor mount. In order to do same I had to remove the foam flotation that was
under the cockpit seats to allow my not so petite body access to install
hardware. I'm not sure that what was in there would be something I'd want to
have wet for very long <not that you would anyway> as it resembled florist's
foam that is intended to absorb water, not float in it. I'm not really
interested in 'pool noodles', milk jugs or the like. I've considered
flotation bags like are used in the Optimist dinghy but am not sure how to
secure them so they don't float away. Similarly the `5 gallon containers
used in Lasers are interesting but again not sure how to secure. Has anyone
else replaced this flotation and what did you use? This is my 'winter
project' this year.
