Real easy to achieve a potter 17..
Cut the lil flat area where the winch is on a new P19 and you get it down to
17' 6" which is 17' in my book..
Plus..
You retain the width and comfort of a P19 while losing an area does not
provide much benefit..
Plus
You can install a marine plywood reinforced stern and outboard bracket that
would allow trailering with motor attached..
Now THAT is an improvement..

You got it all wrong, Bigger isn't always better!
I wish I could say that the Idea of a P17 was mine, but I would be fibbing.
The bug was passed on to me by one of the ooooold Potter Yachters and it bit
hard. I have been going over the specs in my head ever sense.
As to Bill's idea of a different boat to replace a Potter.... I wouldn't be
happy with anything but my boxy little buddy.
