Andrew, the P-15 is so small that when the
companionway and the hatch are open, the air flows
freely. There is a small (4") vent hole (and a
scupper) at the bow.) If you are sleeping with your
feet to the bow and the hatch open, you are staring at
the stars.

Andrew, the key here is that you do not want to climb
up to the bow when at sea to change from a large jib
to a storm jib. The CDI reefer/furler gives you the
control in the cockpit to roll up the jib, say half
way, very easily. Then, if the wind backs off, you can
revert to the full sail very easily. If the wind
continues to build, and you are uncomfortable, you can
easily wind it in all the way. Again, without climbing
out on the deck. The jib downhaul amounts to a simple
line and block where you can bring the jib completely
down and hold it there on the fore deck. In a very
strong wind, even with the jib down, the jib can flap
around and in your way or actually affect the way you
control the boat. I don't have a furler on my P-15,
but I do on my Catalina 27. I plan to put one on the
P-15 because it will improve my ability to respond to
changing conditions more easily. The down side is that
the jib and the furler cost more than a simple down
haul line and block.

Andrew, the 2hp Honda 4 cycle has plenty of power for
the P-15. My gut feel is that you will get better MPG
as well as less pollution. I downloaded all the
dealers in my area from the Honda site and called them
all. The prices ranged from $595 to $880 for the same
thing. The only option to consider is the centrifical
(sp?) clutch. It costs about $200 extra. I opted for
the "forward only" version with no clutch. It requires
a little planning when you start and fast fingers on
the throttle, but once you get the hang of it, it
works fine.

Andrew, no, I did not get the lapper. I just got the
standard jib. I will get one when I make the plunge on
the furler/reefer. I want the sailmaker to know ahead
of time that I plan to use roller reefing.

Andrew, normally, when raising your mainsail, you feed
the "bolt rope" (a rope sewn into the leading edge of
the mainsail) into a groove in the mast. The slugs are
little nylon cylinders which are attached to the
leading edge of the mainsail. You feed these little
babies into the mast groove instead of the bolt rope.
They make the sail slip up and down easier. This can
be beneficial when you are (jiffy) reefing the main
when the wind is too strong. I bought the slugs and
shackles from Sailrite, and plan to install them soon.

Andrew, either way is fine. I like the crutch from IM.
Perhaps you can negotiate and get them to throw it in
as part of your deal.
