That might work, but all the screws will be exposed. What I used was the
Kit #5 rubrail shown on page 390. At the time I bought it, it was sold by
the foot, so I didn't have to buy a kit, and I don't think it cost $200. I
think I spent around $70 or $80. The cheapest kit contains 50 ft, which is
way too much for a 14-footer. I didn't buy the insert; I used 3-strand rope
instead, which the catalog at the time suggested as an alternative to the
vinyl insert.

I've very pleased with it. It is substantial without being bulky. I used
white rope in a black rail, which matches my white hull with black trim and
goes with the tugboat look of my ancient Potter. It has held up well except
one section that was pulled loose when a crew in a trailer shop lifted the
boat onto the trailer. It is attached with stainless screws. The rope is
becoming stained from encounters with docks, but I haven't seen a need to
replace it. If you have to buy the kit then you will probably use the vinyl
insert provided. You may be able to special order the rail by the foot
through West Marine and save some money..

This type of rail fits perfectly on my first generation P14, but it may not
fit later boats because the deck is attached differently. My original rail
was wood with a milled lip at the bottom comparable to the lip on the
vinyl rail.
