I served in a radar picket ship (USS Scanner AGR5) home ported at
Treasure Island in SF Bay. I was a boat coxwain on a 26ft motor whale
boat. Made a trip over to Angel Island once. That was in the period
1956-1959. It's a beautiful bay but the fog can be very thick in the
summer. The autumn is the best time of the year there. The ground
swells coming in under the Golden Gate bridge could be quite a challange
to a small boat. I have just purchased a Potter 19 but won't get to try
her out until next spring due to the weather conditions here in upstate
NY. You are very lucky to have the bay area where the weather is good
for sailing for most of the year.
