They sure are different. My cockpit sole is not cored, but HMS epoxied a
scrap of plywood to the underside of the glass to mount the drain. I did the
same with the two additional drains I added -- one to each rear corner of
the cockpit sole. As to the storage compartment, I too put a drain in the
bottom, but I tee'ed it into the hose between the original (center) cockpit
drain and the transom. In my case, there was no significant water
accumulation problem, but I use that compartment for butane and propane
storage & wanted any gas leaks to be outboard.
