This capsize value thing has given me many a sleepless night and now I'm
afraid I may be forced to sell my boat for safety concerns. The capsize
ratio formula:

RATIO = beamft / (displacementlbs/64)^0.333

yields some interesting results:

Vessel Capsize Ratio

WWP-19 2.65

Island Packet 29 1.97

Small dinghy 1.71

Cast iron bathtub 1.63

55 gal drum upright 1.55

55 gal drum on its side 1.55

Old Town Canoe 1.24

These calculations include a 220 lb occupant. A ratio of less than 2 is
suitable for ocean travel. So as we can see the P-19 doesn't cut it and the
Island Packet 29 is barely suitable for blue water adventure. A small dinghy
is fine for ocean crossings but even better are the cast iron bath tub and
the 55 gal drum. My personal choice is the bath tub because it has a large
drain hole (.1482 knot-seconds wide) so that if it did happen to flood it
would drain faster. The hands down winner though is the Old Town canoe. Just
think of how many lives would have been saved if the canoe was the standard
for crossing the north Atlantic.
