Kazi, which I think translates to wind, is the monthly national boating
magazine in Japan. I picked up a copy yesterday to review the market for
my Yamaha 21 which will be advertised next month. 1000 yen, about $10, for
the magazine. So this morning I read, not really read, I scan the pages of
the rag (nice article on the proper use of the drag chute anchor) and I
note in passing on page 214 that Compac Sun-Cats and Caprie 18s are
available. Then, on page 218 we strike gold - or Potter. A nice little
1/4 page ad on the Potter 19 and 15. Good p[icture of the 19 (sail number
215?) close hauled with a bow wake. They are marketed by Global Marine,
just down the road near my Catch 22. The 19 sells for 1,999,900 Yen (the
15 for 1,399,900). The unit of value here is the 'man' (pronounced 'mon')
and takes 5 places: 10000 = 1 man. So, a 19 at the exchange rate of 105
yen to the dollar is about $19,047.00. Plus tax and fees.
I stopped by Global Marine last October to learn the firts boat had not
arrived and will be shipped to Kyushu (the southern island) when it clears
customs. Japanese citizens almost never pull a trailer on the roads in
Japan, so the Potter will sit on the trailer at a marina for storage.
In the next week I'll wander down to Global and take a look-see.
