We all know you can 'shoot through the hull' with a depthsounder transducer
epoxied to the hull, or in a compartment filled with mineral oil or water.
But mineral oil is messy and its a pain to build a little compartment. And
epoxy is so...permanent.

well, I borrowed a sounder and attached its transducer with simple marine
silicone, and it works great! I tested it against my transom-mount unit by
the same company (different model) and the readings were always within a few
percent of eachother. The deepest I got was 150 feet, but both units read
this just fine.

I still need to experiment further, but I'm encouraged. I had a little
trouble getting readings at the low end of the scale (less than 10 feet -
admittedly the important range!) with the in-hull, siliconed unit, but i was
over such weedy soft bottoms i'm not certain it would have fared any better
hanging from the transom.
