I often find that a little liquid rosin flux will eliminate problems such
as this. For some reason the flux inside the solder is not sufficient.

If the resulting solder joint is not bright as a new nickel, you likely
have a cold joint. These are especially devious since they may work fine
for some time and then fail intermittently. By looking it is hard to tell
that the problem is with the solder joint and not elsewhere.

Of course never use any acid-based flux for electrical work! Cheers.
