Alan,

You're confusing two very different things. The foam is important only when
the boat is swamped (cabin fills with water from a wave, capsize, or hole in
the hull)

An intact non-swamped boat floats in the water the same with or without foam
floation (other than the minimal weight affecting how it sits in the water).

The shape of the hull and the distribtion of cargo and crew determin how it
floats. Putting cargo in the bow helps to keep the bow down so the boat
performs better.

Subject: [WWP] P-19 Floatation

So now I am thoroughly confused. Eric feels the P-19's could use a tad
more while Judy took some out. Ted notes there is also floatation under the
aft bunks, presumably as a way of saying there is sufficient floatation.
So the question is how does one determine their particular P-19 has
sufficient floatation? Can I tell by how the boat rides on the water, how
it sails? Judy mentions measuring what is there. Does that mean cutting
holes in the fiberglass to get at it?
Judy, you removed some. What are the consequences of having too much
floatation? Does the boat get too high in the water?
There was a conversation in the recent past about putting gear forward
because the boat will sail better which makes it sound like there is almost
too much floatation forward. Or do I have the wrong idea of what floatation
is all about?
Thanks,
