HI George,

I took off those "thingies" because I couldn't get them adjusted right
either. The mast swayed too much from side to side during raising and
lowering.

I've since discovered that the "thingies" weren't the problem -- the problem
was that the DPO (dreaded prior owner) made new baby stays and attached them
up at the top shrouds, about 16 feet up, instead of 6 feet up from the butt
of the the mast. The angle was too narrow to keep the mast from swaying,
even if I got the baby stays "piano wire" tight by using some line wrapped
4:1 between the thimble on the baby-stay and the u-bolt on the cabin top.

As long as the baby stays keep the mast from swaying alot (i.e, keep it more
or less centered over the cockpit), they're tight enough. The top of the
mast shouldn't go sideways more than perhaps 1-2 feet to either side, I
think.

I'd be curious to hear from others how far the mast can swing sideways on
their P19's.
