What you need is a Mast Topping Lift, run a 1/16th line from the top of the
mast to the rear of the boom and release it when the main sail is up. I
leave my sails out all season long, the jib is doused with a down haul and
the main sail is wrapped around the boom and then I spiral wrap a 1/4inch
line around the sail. Don't use bungees, they will hit you in the eye or
face at the wrong time, or end up in the water, bungees on a boat are
dangerous.
