I think it's really funny listening to what you guys imagine I carry on my
boat... You guys don't know the half of it :)

Dr Judy sez: I wouldn't go anywhere without duct tape....

Here's a list of the tapes you'll find on my boat:

Duct tape, gaffing tape (optional), rigging tape, 3M clear packing tape,
lightweight ripstop nylon sail tape, and heavy weight sticky-back dacron
insignia sailcloth (for reinforcing holes at batten pockets (caused by
flogging) and for protecting chafe spots you discover as you sail.),
electircal tape, masking tape.

Duct tape is very sticky and good for fixing leaks.... best tape for taping
over hatch boards or chain pipes if you need to keep water out... or
patching a small hole in the hull if you can get it dry enough to get it to
stick...

Gaffing tape is strong cloth backed tape that is almost as sticky as duct
tape, but comes off more easily. It is not waterproff, but will stay adhered
if it gets wet. It doesn't stretch much compared to duct tape. You can
use it to jury rig a spar in position before you lash it with line. It will
last a long time in the sun without curling too.

Goodness! That's eight different tapes I carry. How did I ever get to eight
types? Over the years, I've had to buy them all for differnt reasons, and I
just keep them in my "spare gear" box....

Is there a 12-step program for people like me :)

Eric,

Nope, There was no duct tape on that list!! I don't think Dr. Judy B. is
the
type of person to say, "When in doubt, duct it!" She's more like the person
to
say, "There is a type of tape for every job," and you know that she would
have
a roll (or two) of each on-board ;-). Unless you were running duct work for
a
furnace on your Potter, I doubt Dr. Judy would condone using duct tape. OK,
she might not be as puritanical as all that. ;-) (Just couldn't resist the
imagery that one provided--Perhaps we could start a thread on the proper
placement of heating ducts and thermal unit sizing to heat/cool a P15 and a
P19?).

Are you using duct tape as a temporary hull repair? What use is there for
duct
tape that a sailor wouldn't use: 1) Sail tape 2) Rigging tape 3) A proper
line
and a proper knot? Perhaps your keeping the first mate quite in a panic?
;-)

Perhaps it was on the list that Judy privately e-mailed to Chris, but I
find it perplexing that no one has mentioned duct tape.
