If you have been on this list for awhile you know I have been a stanch
supporter of the "lighter" OMC engines which include both three and four horse
models. These are the small "twins" that only have a forward (and neutral)
gear. My support for these motors might be slipping.

Last month my long shaft 4 HP Johnson went out on me. It felt like I broke a
shear pin so at the first opportunity I pulled the prop. Nope, good pin and
prop liner so when I got home the motor went into the shop. Word came back to
me today that the drive shaft had "ground" itself out of the crankshaft!

I have owned this motor for less than three years and estimate that I have
run it less than thirty hours (most of this at 3/4 throttle or less) so this
shouldn't have happened (even the repairman said so). The shop that has it is
going to contact OMC tomorrow to see if they will extend their one year
warranty to include this obvious defect.

I will keep you posted.

If your dealer is unable to assist with OMC I would recommend...

Write a nice letter to OMC explaining the problem, your membership in the
Potter Web, your support for OMC products, your servicemans comments, Your
disappointment with what hapenned and try to enlist their help in solving the
problem. Let the letter sit for 1.5 to 2 days and read it again... Would you
be nice to the writer?

Do not accuse, do not let anger show, do not threaten... Be positive but
disappointed.

This has worked for me on out of warranty items many times...
