Depth finder transducers seem to be very sensitive to fingerprint oil...
which prevents intimate contact with water.

Several times my depth sounder would go totally bonkers, giving bogus
readings. I finally traced the problem to fingerprint oil, when I touched
or rubbed the transducer face in the process of cleaning algae, seaweed, &
barnacles off the bracket and housing.

Cleaning the transducer face with a little soapy water removed the film,
and restored the depth finder to normal operation.

HINT: a young lady at the optical shop advised me that the costly little
bottles of eyeglass cleaner are equivalent to a 50-50 mix of water and
rubbing alcohol. Since then I've carried a small spray bottle of that 50-50
mixture in the truck for cleaning my several pairs of glasses .. works just
great!! I also find it good for defilming the windshield, and mirrors.
