Years ago I learned to start and run the motor before casting off lines. In
bad conditions I even put the motor in gear before letting go the last line.
With a fancy slipknot on the dock cleat, and a bow line that reaches all the
way to the cockpit (but not to the motor) I can even leave the bow tied to
the dock until I am in gear and starting to move (this is done at a very low
idle speed). I have seen (when watching the circus at local ramps) that the
main reason that a boat ends up on the ramp, rocks, etc. when leaving the
launch area is undue haste.
