There are a number of messages on this site about batteries and the
gases evolved from them. Normally, a battery emits hydrogen only when
charged. In a submerged plate or standard lead-acid battery, this comes
to the top of the cell and is emitted. In the sealed batteries and the
gel batteries, the charging reaction either does not emit hydrogen or it
is absorbed. Chlorine is formed when the sulfuric acid from a battery
contacts sodium chloride. This was a frequent hazard on submarines when
sea water infiltrated the battery compartments. Hydrogen is not toxic
per se but like nitrogen can asphyxiate when it displaces oxygen in
confined spaces. Chlorine, on the other hand, is an irritant which
causes burning of the eyes, nose and mouth as well as pulmonary edema.
