Tohatsu/Nissan 3.5 external tank info

Thanks to everyone who replied to my request on how to put an
external tank on a 3.5 Tohatsu. (I am finally following up on this ...
sailing season is here!)

The problem with the 3.5 is that it does not have a fuel pump, which
is required for a external tank. Several helpful list members sent
me testimonials and even a page out of the shop manual on how
to modify the 3.5 to have a fuel pump.

I just got off the phone with Nissan, and it appears that it is
easy to add the pump to a pre-1992 engine, but for an engine
of my newer vintage it would require taking the block apart and
drilling thru the head to get the suction power to run the
fuel pump. This is not really an option for me, so it looks
like I will have to stick with unpleasant water-way refueling
of the tiny internal tank.
