I have sailed out the gate a few times in a P.14, but I don't recommend
it. The last time was a few years ago when a friend, darrell sandeen wanted to
do it. Darrell is one of the best potter sailors to be found, and he is also a
hollywood actor. He is the skipper in the huyndai commercial, and he also
played Buzz Meeks in the film L.A. confidential. After suffering a heart
attack he wanted to live out some fantasy's, one of them was to sail a Potter
out the Golden Gate. We did it, three potters sailed out the gate and were
blasted by 30+ MPH winds and huge swells. The farther out we got the worse the
weather got, so we headed back in. The photo on the I.M. website of the yellow
potter was shot from my boat, the Gate is in the background.
Most sailors around here think anyone who sails a potter, or any boat
under 35 feet out the gate is NUTS, they're right! Jerry Barrilleaux
