I made a replacement Companionway hatch out of 3/8" Black Smoked Plexiglass,
and it serves three purposes:

More Weather Resistant than the original Plywood
Provides for (some) privacy, yet a view of the world
Frees up the original hatch for use as an interior table, usefull for
when it rains (and allows indoor/outdoor seating options for 4 diners.
