Because my normal route to the Gulf involves passing under a 9 foot
clearance bridge, I installed a spare set of gudgeons as Tom suggested,
located about 4 inches starboard and slightly above the factory ones. The
factory mast crutch fits in these, and holds the mast level until I am clear
of the bridge and can raise it. Rudder and motor may be used without
restriction. The only downside to this rig so far has been the need to line
up with the bridge opening carefully, as the total length of the vessel in
this configuration is over 30 feet and the masthead swings wide in turns.
Also need to remember to attach a line to crutch, as I didn't install the
locking type upper gudegon that the factory uses.
