Lightning - Car jumper cables?

Would you get any protection from lightning by
clipping car jumper cables to the mast slot and
tossing the other ends overboard? Maybe clip the
other ends to a metal grounding plate before throwing
it over? Otherwise the shortest path seems to be
through the cabin roof, down the cables, and into the
keel.

One time we were deep sea fishing out of Morehead
City, NC on a head boat when we were caught in a
lightning storm. It was very frightening - there is
no way I would want to repeat that experience, but I
do want to know what to do if it happens. Thanks for
the input - I think that this is a very important
thread.
