The Hull Speed formula is a fairly accurate, however the Potter hull isn't
conventional. The P. 19 hull has hard chines with a V at each end with a
almost flat center section. She has low wetted surface, and at 14 degrees of
heel she will lift half the hull out of the water. I would call it a semi
planing hull, and you can get 6.5 knots out of these boats. Last weekend I
was sailing South S.F.Bay, we were sailing next to Greg Yu in Sampan at high
tide and his GPS showed 7 MPH.
Think of a Hobie 16, it doesn't have a planing hull but it can exceed 20
knots. The real proof of a Potters speed is when we pass a 30 footer.
